SUR Restaurant & Lounge Bartender Jax Taylor, Vanderpump Rules cast member

If the drama slowly built during Season 1 of Bravo’s TV show Vanderpump Rules, Season 2 started right in the middle of it. Much of the show that stars the servers and bartenders of SUR Restaurant & Lounge in West Hollywood seems to be centered on Stassi Schroeder and Jax Taylor’s relationship. Over the course of the episodes, that has resulted in lots of crying, fighting and roller coaster emotions for the pair.

Bartender Tom Sandoval with Sophie Gayot

Season 2 of Bravo’s “Vanderpump Rules” started a few weeks ago. What a mess and drama so far! I had the feeling that Jax (Taylor) was not going to reconnect with Stassi (Schroeder) — I even told him so in person when dining at SUR Restaurant & Lounge where the show is filmed. But Tom (Sandoval) is in such a quagmire situation with Kristen (Doute); what happened there? Hopefully it is not because I took his baseball cap. Well, let us see what will happen when it airs tonight.

As a food critic, I am often asked if I were to go on a “date”, what restaurant he should take me to. My answer is clear: a concert — but only classical music. Naturally, I was very happy to be invited to the 69th season premiere of the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra last weekend.

I had the privilege of going backstage and interviewing Guido Lamell, the music director and conductor. He has also been a violinist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 1979. KUSC Radio host Rich Capparela made the introductions of Santa Monica Mayor Pam O’Connor and violinist Roberto Cani, who played Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto in D major, Op. 35 on a 1714 Stradivarius!

The best way to get to Catalina Island, located 22 miles of the coast of Los Angeles, is to hop on one of Catalina Express’s vessels, from San Pedro, Long Beach or Dana Point. There are many things to do once you arrive. If you are not afraid of heights, try parasailing. You will enjoy great views of the island and the ocean, as well as peace and quiet.

Get a sneak peek with the video above that I filmed with some difficulty. I was not wearing a helmet with a built-in GoPro camera, but rather holding my camera in my hand while I sailed!

Making a liquid nitrogen Caipirinha at The Bazaar by José Andrés with server Jorge Alvarez

I think we are all looking forward to this long Independence Day celebration weekend, so we can relax….

If you are in Los Angeles, I suggest dropping by chef José Andrés’s restaurant The Bazaar at SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills, and sip an Ln2 Caipirinha. Besides drinking it, you will also enjoy its production. There’s a little show produced by the liquid nitrogen poured on the Brazilian cachaca and fresh lime.

Happy Holiday!

And in case you have decided to barbecue, here are’s All About Barbecue Tips.
